A 20th century doctor who might have been murdered, a 19th century mariner braving the high seas from Portugal to Malacca in the East Indies aboard his own ship, an 18th century beautiful socialite who married a political activist forced to flee his home and change his name to escape arrest, an Assistant Colonial Secretary, a distinguished diplomat of the British Empire knighted by Her Majesty for his services, a war casualty on the infamous Siam Railway, an honourable family man accused of harbouring a spy, traders, journalists, authors, jurors and famous sportsmen. My family.

This is a story of the rivers that flow in my Eurasian veins.

A story of ordinary people who came out of Europe and started families in the East; of local people who married the “orang puteh” at the risk of being ostracized by their families; of Eurasian professionals who suffered discrimination in colonial Singapore yet stood tall; of loyal subjects who readily volunteered to defend the “impregnable fortress Singapore” and gave the ultimate sacrifice for “King and country”; of ordinary men and women who emerged as extraordinary athletes and coaches in sports. Readers interested in the history of Singapore, particularly of the Japanese Occupation and the Eurasian experience in Bahau, will unearth interesting nuggets from actual memories of survivors in our family.

LIfe in post -war and pre-Independant Singapore.

Facts are from newspapers and other publications, anecdotes from my memories and those of relatives as recorded by their children or grandchildren.

Come sit with me and savour this cocktail of family history, gently stirred and definitely not shaken.
